The Warblers of Thickson's Woods - Ongoing SeriesThickson's Woods, Whitby is both an important stop over site and nesting grounds for hundreds of warblers each spring. This is an ongoing series of portraits of the various warblers you can find in the woods if your eyes are both sharp and quick enough! Warblers don't sit still for long. The challenge was keeping a sense of movement in each painting; the square format usually lends itself to a static composition.
The "rules" for this series is each painting must be based on a photo I have taken at Thickson's Woods (even though there are plenty of warblers elsewhere)! This is an ongoing series I plan on adding to over time. Each painting is on a 6x6" canvas with a thick stretcher, making them suitable for display on a shelf/table. You can purchase items featuring these paintings at my Zazzle store. |

Yellow Warblers are a common, and they nest on the meadow side of Thickson's Woods. Their bright yellow feathers, and the chestnut streaks on the male, ensure they stand out. I added violet to the background as it is a compliment of yellow and to make the bird's colours more vivid. The violet streaks remind me of lilacs.
