My first love is photographing local wildlife, particularly birds. There is something exciting about being able to catch the glint in their eyes; it's even more exciting to me than a well-timed action shot. That glint in the eye, the piece of the soul, makes the animal an individual, a character.
When I got pack into painting after a decades long hiatus, I decided I wanted to explore these characters even further and bring out their personality. I use the saturated, cheerful colours of acrylics to recreate the world I imagine the ways these characters may view it, which may sometimes seem somewhat dreamlike to us.
The vast majority of the works on this site are based on photos of my own, except where otherwise noted, with my own interpretation.
I hope you enjoy these works depicting the characters you may find in and around Durham Region, Ontario. From Thickson's Woods and Lynde Shores in Whitby, to Carruther's Creek and Rotary Park in Ajax, to Frenchman's Bay and Petticoat Creek in Pickering and anywhere in between, including one's own backyard, welcome to the secret lives of the wildlife of Durham.
