This painting is based on a photo I took at Rosetta McClain Gardens, Scarborough. I was taken by the strong backlighting on the canna lily, which made the flower look alien and larger than life. Its petals also created interesting negative space against the dark background.
I tried to capture the movement of the hummingbird's wings with quick strokes of translucent paint with few details. Bits of light play off her feathers, contrasting with the all-over glow of the flower. |
